o Varietal Wines - These are the varieties of wines in which whose names are derived from the names of the grapes that were used in the production. The more common kinds of varietal wines include, chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, merlot, pinos gris, and sangiovese. Most wines are termed as this method so they can be easily classified.

o Generic Wines - Most often than not, generic wines are non-existent in European countries. But, for other countries all around the world, generic wines can be found and are abundant. These kinds of wines are not really the real thing, and are just generic. For example, generic wines named champagne are not actually champagne, that is since real champagne can only be produced in the champagne region of France.
